Discover how acupuncture can support you on your pregnancy journey.
Pregnancy can be a joyful time for a couple. It can also come with some physically uncomfortable symptoms that future moms have to endure. Pregnancy acupuncture can ease some of the symptoms to make you more comfortable and reduce pain.
-
Many women experience nausea and vomiting during their pregnancy. This is caused by the fluctuations of hormones that occur in early pregnancy (approximately 6-16 weeks). Birthe has helped relieve these symptoms in her daughter while she was pregnant. (researchgate.net)
-
In order for your body to produce the placenta to support the baby, your metabolism will increase, while your blood sugar and blood pressure stay the same. This results in the feeling of fatigue that most women experience in the first trimester of pregnancy. The headaches you experience are probably caused by the increased hormones and blood circulation in your body. Our clients say that acupuncture dramatically improves their fatigue and reduces their headaches. (researchgate.net)
-
Later in your pregnancy you may experience heartburn on a regular basis. This is because the hormone progesterone is increasing in your body and relaxes the muscles of the uterus-and also the valve between the stomach and the esophagus-allowing acid up into your esophagus. Acid reflux is also caused by the growing baby causing your stomach acids to back up into your esophagus. (researchgate.net)
-
Hemorrhoids are uncomfortable, and unfortunately, they are common during pregnancy. This is because your growing baby puts pressure on the veins of the large intestine. Constipation is caused by the reduced activity of your bowels and the iron in your prenatal vitamins may not be helping this problem either! A quick appointment for acupuncture can ease constipation and in turn the discomfort of hemorrhoids. (researchgate.net)

You may feel very stressed and have trouble sleeping during your pregnancy. This can be caused by the preparations for becoming a parent and the overwhelming feelings this can cause. Acupuncture has helped my clients to reduce anxiety and stress. This in turn can lead to better sleep quality and lowered blood pressure. (researchgate.net)

Sciatica, hip, joint, and back pain: It’s a reality that you will gain weight during pregnancy. This puts extra stress on your body. Also, your hormones will begin to loosen your hips and pelvis in preparation for birth. This can cause some women to have pain in their hips, back, and sciatic areas. Acupuncture treatments have been shown to reduce these symptoms during pregnancy. (researchgate.net)
-
Later in your pregnancy, your baby needs to turn and have its head placed downward into your pelvis. This is the way that babies need to be positioned to be born. If your baby doesn’t show signs of turning and keeps its head upwards, this is called breech. Undergoing sessions of moxibustion and acupuncture at our clinic can encourage the baby to become positioned correctly. (researchgate.net)

Acupuncture sessions that are performed during the last few weeks of pregnancy can be very helpful in preparing the body for the task of labor and delivery of your baby. It can help reduce anxiety around the birthing process, ripen the cervix, and help you have more energy to get you through the labor and delivery. (researchgate.net)
-
Acupuncture has been shown to help induce and shorten the length of labor. There is also an impressive correlation between women who receive pregnancy acupuncture and their ability to deliver their baby safe and healthy with limited medical interventions such as epidurals or c-sections.
Many clients ask if acupuncture is safe during pregnancy…it definitely is! It caries no more risk for pregnant women if the acupuncturist is properly trained and avoids certain points on the body.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Don’t arrive with an empty stomach. Have a light snack before your appointment to avoid fainting.
Wear something light and loose like shorts and a tank top for easy access to treatment areas.
-
It depends on which areas are being treated. You will be covered by a sheet throughout the appointment but it is recommended that you arrive in loose and comfortable clothing like shorts and a tank for easy access to treatment areas.
-
Not at all, this is one of the biggest misconceptions about acupuncture. The needles are very fine and flexible and would compare to that of a human hair. Acupuncture needles are virtually painless when inserted in the skin. Most people find acupuncture extremely relaxing and fall asleep during treatment.
-
There is always a chance when working with pain that it can get temporarily worse before it improves. We assess this by seeing how you respond to your first acupuncture treatment and adjust your treatment accordingly to minimize the chance of discomfort.
-
This is assessed on an individual basis and depends on whether the injury or pain is acute or chronic. Acute/recent injuries respond quickly to treatment. Chronic injuries that have been ongoing for some time will take longer to fix the underlying issue.
-
Your first visit is approximately 75 minutes and this includes initial intake, discussion, orthopaedic assessment (if required), building of a treatment plan and then the actual treatment.
Subsequent or follow up treatments are 60 minutes, including needling and any additional modalities like Cupping, GuaSha, or E-stimulation.
-
Depending on your individual situation treatment could be recommended once per week or biweekly. My goal is to get you out of pain and back to doing what you love as quickly as possible.
